Raise the Roof

Amid a rising tide of antisemitism across much of Europe comes an extraordinary story of resurrection and renewal. During WWII the Nazis destroyed a forest of wooden synagogues – considered to be among the most remarkable wooden structures ever built. This documentary follows a team of over 300 artisans and students under the leadership of artists Rick and Laura Brown, and the remarkable collaborative effort to rebuild the glorious Gwoździec synagogue using only traditional tools, methods and materials. Through its compelling narrative and beautiful cinematography of the synagogue’s unusually vibrant interior decoration, the film paints a vivid picture of a rich period in Polish Jewish history.

Following the screening, the film’s Art Team Director, Krista Lima will lead a discussion.
