Hollywood and World War II

Well aware that two-thirds of the U.S. Population went to the movies every week in the 1930’s,  the US government enlisted Hollywood to power the WWII propaganda machine. Four directors, including Frank Capra and three Jewish immigrants – Anatole Litvak, Billy Wilder and William Wyler, created  documentaries and newsreels that captured the frontline in Italy, the bombardment of Germany, the liberation of Dachau and the US presence in post-war Germany. They suffered physical and psychological injuries, having risked their lives for their new homeland. The remarkable story of these directors is told with gripping footage from long forgotten documentaries mixed with clips from their iconic Hollywood masterpieces. Sponsored by R.M. Davis.

The most influential documentary series in American history.’
