Carvalho’s Journey

How did an observant Sephardic Jew from Charleston SC come to join one of the greatest adventures of the 19th century? When legendary expeditioner John Frémont set out through the Rockies to find a transcontinental railroad route, he recruited Carvalho to document the trek using daguerreotype, an early form of photography. Carvalho covered 2,400 miles of treacherous terrain and captured the panoramas of the American West. Using stunning footage of the wild western landscapes and moving daily journal entries, Carvalho’s Journey paints a vivid portrait of an extraordinary man and an amazing American adventure.  The film will be followed by a discussion led by the filmmaker Steve Rivo and Justin McCann, Lunder Curator of the Colby Museum of Art.

This program is made possible the the Lunder, Sam H. Cohen, and Bernard Osher Foundations.
