Food & Film Event Brings the Flavors of Israel to Maine

The Maine Jewish Film Festival and the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine present In Search of Israeli Cuisine – A Film and Food Tasting Event on Sunday, November 5

The beauty and diversity of Israeli Cuisine will be on display at a showing of the film In Search of Israeli Cuisine on Sunday, November 5, 2017, from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Jewish Community Alliance, 1342 Congress St., Portland, ME.  Co-sponsored by the Maine Jewish Film Festival and Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine, the event highlights the interesting relationship of food and culture within the multi-cultural Israeli society.  Advance tickets (which include a reception featuring Israeli food) are $25, on sale now at ericr71.sg-host.com.

Featuring the James Beard award winning chef Michael Solomonov, the film profiles chefs, home cooks, vintners, and cheese-makers that come from the diverse ethnic groups that live in Israel.  Through cinema verité scenes, the film follows Chef Solomonov as he enters peoples’ lives and their kitchens – discusses their roots, inspirations, what their grandmothers cooked – and how they’re preserving traditions and updating recipes with global influences.

“The complexity of Israel is reflected in its food, its farmers, and its chefs.  We’re excited to give Mainers a way to experience Israel’s diverse cultures, delicious foods and beautiful landscapes without needing to travel halfway around the world.”  – Barbara Merson, Executive Director of the Maine Jewish Film Festival

Shot in over 100 locations, the film travels through many unique landscapes including the Negev Desert, the Sea of Galilee, the ancient city of Jerusalem and the pulsing metropolis of Tel Aviv.  As the author of the New York Times best selling cookbook, Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking, Solomonov is an authoritative and engaging tour guide to the Israeli farm to table movement.

“With its assortment of mouthwatering ingredients and dishes, In Search of Israeli Cuisine is an unadulterated foodie delight.” – Hollywood Reporter

A reception will follow the screening with a sampling of Israeli foods prepared by Portland chefs Daniel Heinrich and Haggai Bernstein.
